At SCEWERO (Strengthening the Capacities on Extreme Weather Events in Romania), our mission is to enhance research excellence, scientific reputation, and research management capacity in the field of extreme weather events at UBB. Through a strong international partnership, we aim to bridge knowledge gaps, improve forecasting capabilities, and develop innovative solutions for better societal resilience to climate-related hazards.

With this project, we aim to advance scientific excellence, enhance research collaboration and visibility, and strengthen research management and administrative skills at UBB with the support of our highly performant partners (CMCC, UANTWERP, JLU).

The project is built on three pillars.

The first pillar will allow the advancement of scientific excellence by strengthening the research capacity of the UBB team on extreme temperature and precipitation events, including compound events (heatwaves and droughts), using cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence models for forecasting and impact assessment, and improving science communication strategies for more effective public outreach and policy engagement.

The research outcome is connected to the global EW4ALL initiative and aims to improve the national Early Warning System in Romania through AI-driven analysis and forecasting and to engage local communities in climate risk awareness through user-friendly digital applications

The second pillar is to enhance research collaboration and visibility of the UBB and consists of establishing strategic networks with leading international organization, increasing UBB’s scientific output and international visibility through high-impact publications, joint research projects, and knowledge exchange, and fostering participation in global initiatives, such as the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN).

The third pillar is to strengthen the research management and administrative skills of the UBB team by organizing a dedicated team to be trained for project implementation and international research funding applications and benefit of exchanges of best practices and lessons learned from highly performant partners.
