11-12 September 2025 - Training for drought and floods
General information
The training is the second in a series of training sessions dedicated to increasing the research capacity at UBB. The training will be coordinated by UAntwerpen and implemented together with the JLU team. will be developed. JLU will provide training in detecting and forecasting floods and droughts from short- and long-term perspectives based on statistical and AI techniques. This training encompasses hybrid modeling of droughts and floods, combining AI techniques to enhance physical and hydrological models. UBB researchers will receive training in working with various supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning models for diverse flood and drought modelling tasks. These tasks include detection, prediction, data processing, big data analysis, projections, impact analysis, statistical downscaling, and bias correction.
Topics
The main topics addressed during the training session will be:
Hydrological and flood modelling (JLU)
- European weather forecasting (UA)
Definition of drought indicators and drought analysis (JLU)
Climate change impacts on drought (UA)
Post-processing ensemble weather forecasts (UA)
ECMWF’s Anemoi framework: weather forecasting based on machine learning (UA)
Multivariate drought analysis (UA)
Detailed information about the daily program can be found here.
